Hip Hop By Design is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and your gift is tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. What you give pays for the things a camp actually needs. The materials, the studio time, the video, the awards, and the scholarships that come after. Through 2025, every camp was free to the students who attended.

These are not tiers we made up. Every number below is a line in the camp budget, so you can see exactly what your gift covers.

  • $100One awardA gift card for one winner. Six go out at every camp, for the top three raps and the top three architectural models.
  • $375The recording studioA professional room and an engineer for the session where students record. They leave with a real mix, not a phone recording.
  • $600Every award at one campAll six gift cards, so no winner goes home with a handshake.
  • $2,000The music videoA local videographer films and cuts the video the students leave with.
  • $5,000Materials and shirtsEverything students build with for four days, plus a camp shirt for every student, facilitator and volunteer.
  • $10,000A full scholarshipThe Michael Ford Hip Hop Architecture Scholarship for one former camper studying architecture.
  • $30,000A whole campFour days for 30 to 50 students. Two certified facilitators, curriculum, materials, studio, video and awards. One city, start to finish.

  • $30,000A full camp, funded by the city for the city
  • UnderSmaller gifts stay earmarked for that city and combine with grants, sponsors and host funds

The hardest year is the second one. The energy is there and the funding usually is not. Give to a city and the money is earmarked for that city. Funds are not moved elsewhere without donor authorization, and restricted-fund administration is subject to accounting and legal review.
